After the guard card
Getting the guard card is not the end of the training. California requires 32 hours of security officer skills training within the first six months of your registration, and 8 hours of continuing training every year after that. Both are online and self paced with us. If you are not licensed yet, start with the initial 8 hours instead.

Quick answer
California security guards owe two blocks of training after registration. The first is 32 hours of security officer skills training, due within the first six months of the registration. The second is 8 hours of continuing training, due every year. The power to arrest training is separate and comes earlier: BSIS requires it before the registration is issued at all.
The first point is behind you if you already hold a card
BSIS requires the power to arrest training to be completed before a security guard registration is issued. If you hold a card, this is already done. If you do not, this is where you start, not here.
BSIS sets a fallback for a registrant who cannot give their employing private patrol operator the certificates for the skills training: 16 hours within 30 days of the employment date. Note that this clock runs from the employment date, not the registration date.
The full 32 hours of security officer skills training must be completed within the first six months of registration. Under the fallback above, the remaining 16 hours are due within six months of the employment date.
Once the initial training is behind you, 8 hours of continuing training is required annually for as long as you hold the registration.
Both requirements are online and self paced. Take the 32 hours if you are inside your first six months, the 8 hour refresher if your card is active and you are keeping it current.

BSIS puts the obligation to keep them on you
BSIS requires every registered security guard to keep the certificate of completion for the required training until the registration expires or has been canceled.
The 16 hours within 30 days fallback exists precisely for the registrant who cannot give their employing private patrol operator the completion certificates, which tells you how routinely they get asked for.
You receive a certificate when you complete a course with us. Store it somewhere you can find it again, not just in the email it arrived in.
A training certificate proves the training. The registration itself is the record BSIS publishes, and you can check it on the state license search.
It is the training California requires after your security guard registration is issued. There are two parts. The first is 32 hours of security officer skills training, required within the first six months of registration. The second is 8 hours of continuing training, required every year for as long as you hold the card. Both are separate from the power to arrest training, which BSIS requires before the registration is issued.
Within the first six months of your registration. There is also a fallback in the BSIS rules: a registrant who cannot provide their employing private patrol operator with the certificates of satisfactory completion must complete 16 hours within 30 days of their employment date, and the remaining 16 hours within six months of that employment date. Note that the fallback runs from the employment date rather than the registration date.
It is the annual continuing training. BSIS requires 8 hours of continuing training to be completed every year. Ours is online and self paced, and it is intended for guards whose registration is active and not expired. It is $22.99.
Yes. Our 32 hours of continuing education is fully online and self paced, at $59.99. BSIS states the training may be administered by a private patrol operator, a Bureau certified training facility, or a Bureau approved course provider. We are a BSIS licensed facility, ATG3001, and you can verify that yourself on the state license search.
If you are within the first six months of your registration, yes. The 32 hours is tied to the registration, not to the application, so holding the card does not clear it. If your first six months have passed and the 32 hours are behind you, what remains is the 8 hours of continuing training each year.
Until the registration expires or has been canceled. BSIS puts that obligation on every registered security guard, for the certificates of completion of the required training. Keep them somewhere you can retrieve them, because an employing private patrol operator can ask to see them.
The 32 hours is one time, in your first six months, and it is security officer skills training. The 8 hours repeats annually and is continuing training. A guard in their first year may owe both. A guard several years in owes the 8 hours each year.
No. Start with the initial 8 hours of training, which is Part 1 Power to Arrest online and Part 2 in a classroom. See how to become a security guard in California, or go straight to what the training costs. Come back here once your registration is issued.
If you need the initial training too
Continuing education is online, so there is nothing to attend. If you also need the initial 8 hours, Part 2 is in person and we run it at two classrooms. Our license is ATG3001.
